Psalm 141

Lord, I call to You. Come quickly to me.  Hear my voice when I call to You.

May my prayer be like incense – sweet and pleasing.  May my worship be like the evening sacrifice.

Set a guard over my mouth – keep watch over the door of my lips.  Help me to control my tongue – to   say only what glorifies You.

Don’t let me heart be drawn to what is evil – keep me from its enticement.

Let a righteous man strike me – it’s kindness and refreshing to be reprimanded by a godly man.

My prayer is against evildoers – destroy their rulers, destroy and scatter them – humiliate them.

My eyes are fixed on You.  In You I take refuge from death.  Keep me from the snares and traps of the evildoers.  Let them fall into their own traps and snares, while I pass by in safety.

Psalm 140

Rescue me from evil, violent men.  Protect me.

Rescue and protect me from those who devise evil plans in their hearts and stir up arguments every day.  They make their tongues as sharp as a snake’s – poisonous too.

Keep me from the hand of the wicked.  Protect me from those who plan to trip me.  Proud, holier than me men have hidden a snare, spread out a net and set traps.

You are my God.  Hear my cry.  Have mercy.

You are my strong deliverer.  You shield my head in the day of battle.  You protect my thoughts from negative influences.

Don’t let the wicked have their way or they will become proud.

Let those who are causing me trouble experience the same trouble – let it boomerang back on them.  Punish them.  Don’t establish them.  May disaster hunt them down.

God secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy.

Surely the righteous will praise You and the upright will live before You.

Psalm 75

Give thanks to God.

God is as near as His name.

Tell of His wonderful deeds and He is here.

God chooses the appointed time and judges uprightly.

When everything physical and emotional is shaking and crumbling, God holds us firm.

Don’t boast of your own accomplishments, they’re not yours.  No man can boast of anything except knowing God.

God will punish the wicked.

Sing praise to God.

The wicked will be punished, the righteous will be lifted up.

Psalm 73

God is good to those who are pure in heart.  If your motives and intentions are in God’s will, blessings follow.

The writer nearly lost his purity, nearly had evil motives and intentions enjoying the wicked.  Getting away with everything, even prospering, seemingly blessed.

In Your sanctuary I understand.  These are the only blessings they’ll experience.  Soon they’ll be destroyed.

I am always with You.

You hold my hand.

You guide me with Your counsel.

You lead me to perfection.

There is nothing here on earth for me.

Everything I need is in heaven and You.

This body may fail, but God strengthens my Spirit.

The wicked prosper because God gave them their start and their own efforts were successful.  Perhaps Satan helped them prosper.  But they will not prosper forever.  God will step in one day.  Their efforts won’t be enough.  Satan will betray them.  God will either remove or move His hand.  Unless God is in it from the beginning and every step of the way, they will not be prosperous for long and they will never be truly prosperous.

The Wrath of God

Nevertheless, the Lord said to Jehu, “Because you have done well in carrying out what is right in My sight and have done to the house of Ahab all that was in My heart, four generations of your sons will sit on the throne of Israel.” II Kings 10:30

Jehu did well in carrying out what was right in God’s sight – he eliminated the Baal worship for Israel (verse 29) and he annihilated the house of Ahab – every son (10:1-10), every great man, close friend and priest (verse 11), leaving him no survivors.  What strikes me is that annihilating the house of Ahab was “all that was in My heart”.  It brings me up short that brutally destroying evil is in God’s heart.  It reminds me that He is a God to be feared, respected and obeyed or else there are serious consequences – in this life and the next.

Psalm 52

You boast?  Of what?  You’re evil.  All you can boast of is evil.  You’re a disgrace in God’s eyes – that’s nothing to boast about.

Your tongue doesn’t sing praise of God – it plots evil for others.  It’s as sharp as a tack or a razor.

You love evil instead of good, lies instead of truth.

Therefore, God will destroy you, uproot you as a tornado.  Others will laugh.  That’s what happens when you don’t trust in God and respect others.

Those who trust in God are like the olive tree.

Use your tongue to praise God.
