Psalm 132

Lord, remember David and all the hardships he endured.

Lord, remember me and all the hardships I have endured.

David swore an oath and made a vow not to go home or go to sleep until he found a place for God’s home.

Let us go to God’s home where He puts His feet up.

Lord, come to Your home.

May Your priests be clothed with right living and may Your saints sing for joy.

For the sake of Your servant, don’t reject him.

God swore an oath to David that his descendants would forever be kings if they kept God’s word.

God has chosen Zion for His dwelling, for His resting place.  He will bless the city with abundant provisions, food for the poor, salvation for priests, joy for saints.

He will bless David with strength, light, shameful enemies, a resplendent crown.

Psalm 131

My heart – my innermost being – is not proud.

My eyes are not haughty – they don’t see me as more than I am.

I do not concern myself with great matters.  I don’t stick my nose where it doesn’t belong.  I just do my job the best I can.

I do not concern myself with things too wonderful for me – with things beyond my means, my talents, my capabilities.

But I have stilled and quieted my soul.  I don’t go seeking the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow – I am content to mine gold at home.

Like a weaned child with its mother is my soul within me – nestled quietly against God’s bosom.

Psalm 130

Out of the depths of sin and misery I cry to You O Lord.  Hear my voice.  Be attentive to my cry for mercy.

If you kept a record of sins, who could stand?  But with You there is forgiveness, therefore You are feared and revered.

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His word I put my hope. My soul waits for the Lord more than the night shift waits for the morning.

Put your hope in the Lord, for with the Lord is unfailing love, and with Him is full redemption.  He Himself will redeem us from all our sins.

Miscellaneous Genesis Revealings

“And the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”  Genesis 1:2

What kind of hovering?  How did You hover?  Contemplatively?  Lazy river?  Protective?  The Hebrew word means to brood.  Brood has several meanings:

Brood can mean to sit on or incubate, Holy Spirit incubating the earth, keeping it warm so it would be ready for creation.  The earth inside the womb of the Holy Spirit, and therefore inside the womb of God.

Brood can mean a bird covering its young with its wings.  Protective, comforting.  An image used in both the Old and New Testaments.

Brood can also mean to sit quietly and thoughtfully, to meditate.  Did You review all the changes the earth would go through?  How did it make You feel?  Amazed?  Disappointing?  Angry? Sad?  Sad enough for the other meaning of brood to apply?

The Hebrew word can also mean to be relaxed – So it was a kind of lazy river!

“Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings.”  Genesis 3:7

Odd.  One of the reasons Eve took the fruit from the tree was because it was desirable for gaining wisdom.  The first new knowledge they acquire when their eyes are opened is evil, not good – they were naked, that was shameful, and they needed to cover themselves.

They ate from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, not realizing or understanding that all they knew up to this point was good and they hadn’t yet encountered anything even remotely evil.  You would think they’d want to skip the knowledge of evil altogether, but apparently the allure of knowing as much as God was greater than the fear of the unknown evil.

“If Cain is avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy-seven fold.”  Genesis 4:24

Wow.  Talk about arrogance!  Lamech has killed a young man for injuring him (apparently not a life-threatening injury) – hardly an offense worthy of death, which means there are grounds for questioning the killing.  Cain being avenged sevenfold was God’s pronouncement, not his own.  Now, six generations later, Lamech claims seventy-seven fold (eleven times as much) for himself.  How arrogant!

Psalm 129

They have greatly oppressed me from my youth, but they have not gained the victory over me.

Plowmen have plowed my back and made their furrows long – they have tried their hardest to beat me down.

But the Lord is righteous; He has cut me free from the cords of the wicked.

May all who hate those who follow You be turned back in shame.  May they wither like uprooted grass. May no one bless them.

Psalm 128

Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in His ways.  Good things will come to those who respect God and follow His direction.

You will eat the fruit of your labor, blessings and prosperity will be yours.

Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house, your sons will be like olive shoots around your table.

So is the man blessed who hears and respects the Lord.

May the Lord bless you from Zion all the days of your life, may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem and may you live to see your grandchildren.

Peace be upon Israel.

Psalm 127

Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain.  Whatever you build, it must be God’s plan.

Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.  Unless the Lord protects it, you won’t be able to prevent anything.

In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat – for the Lord grants sleep to those He loves.  No matter how hard you work, if God is not working with you, there’ll be no rest.

Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from Him. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are sons born in one’s youth. The world can be conquered by a family working together.

Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them.  They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate.

Whatever we have in life, whatever we set our hand to do, if God is not the foundation, if God is not an integral part, it’s pointless.  God does most of the work.  We actually do very little.

Father, the verses about children are very difficult for the childless.
