Failure to Complete Conquests

From Judges 1:21-36 (also Joshua 13:13; 16:10; 17:11-13; 15:63)

Twelve tribes. Ten of them are on the failure list. Only Simeon and Gad aren’t mentioned. The Israelites were to either completely destroy or completely drive out the long list of Canaanites and then occupy the Promised Land enemy-free. They failed and the “-ites” became thorns in their sides.

As believers in Christ, we are called to drive out the “-ites” from our lives in order to live in our Promised Land of abundant life. We must drive out every sin, every attitude, every thought, every feeling, every word, every action that displeases God and hinders our fellowship with Him.

Complaining, coveting, selfishness and dwelling in the past must go. So must focusing on hurts, habits, and hang-ups. We must deliberately drive them out of our minds, hearts, spirits and lives or they will become thorns in our sides and lead us into self-focus and self-worship.

Drive them out! Every last one!

Psalm 119 – Pe

(Pe is the seventeenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet)

Your word is wonderful – therefore I obey it. It’s the best thing to do.

The unfolding of Your word (the revealing) gives light, it gives understanding to the simple.

I open my mouth and pant, longing for Your word.

Turn to me and have mercy on me, as You always do to those who love Your name.

Direct my footsteps according to Your word, let no sin rule over me.

Redeem me from the oppression of men, that I may obey Your word. Help me to put aside the opinions of others that I may obey Your word.

Make Your face shine upon Your servant – smile on me and teach me Your word.

I cry because Your word is not obeyed.
